There is a particular frustration familiar to anyone who has used the internet long enough: the creeping sense that software you once loved has been quietly hollowed out. Features disappear behind paywalls. Interfaces grow cluttered with recommendations you did not request. Notifications multiply. Load times lengthen. What was once a tool becomes something closer to a managed experience — one optimized not for your benefit, but for someone else's quarterly report.

This is not nostalgia distorting perception. The degradation of consumer and enterprise software is measurable, documented, and — crucially — intentional. Understanding why it happens requires looking past the product roadmaps and into the underlying incentives that shape them.

The Mechanics of Managed Decline

Cory Doctorow coined the term "enshittification" to describe the lifecycle of digital platforms, and the framework has proven remarkably durable. The pattern follows a recognizable arc: a platform first delivers genuine value to attract users, then gradually redirects that value toward business customers and advertisers, and finally extracts maximum revenue from everyone before the product collapses under its own compromises.

What makes this cycle so persistent is that it is not driven by malice or incompetence alone. It emerges logically from the incentive structures that govern modern software companies. Venture capital funding demands growth at a pace that organic product improvement rarely sustains. Engagement metrics — daily active users, session length, click-through rates — become proxies for value, even when the behaviors they measure are actively harmful to users. And network effects trap people inside platforms long after those platforms have stopped serving them well.

Consider the trajectory of LinkedIn. In its early years, the platform functioned as a relatively straightforward professional directory. Today, it surfaces an algorithmically curated feed populated with motivational posts, viral anecdotes, and sponsored content, all competing for space with the professional updates users originally came to find. The product did not change because users asked for it. It changed because engagement metrics rewarded emotional content over informational content, and because the advertising model required maximizing time on site.

When the Product Is the Trap

The smartphone app ecosystem has refined these tactics to a considerable degree of sophistication. Developers have absorbed decades of behavioral psychology research and applied it with precision. Variable reward schedules — the same mechanism that makes slot machines compelling — are embedded into notification systems, social feeds, and content recommendation engines. The pull-to-refresh gesture on a social media app is not a neutral UI decision; it is a deliberate analog to pulling a lever.

Enterprise software is not immune. Salesforce, once praised for simplifying customer relationship management, has expanded through acquisition into a platform so complex that entire consulting industries exist to help companies configure it. Microsoft 365 bundles features across products in ways that make individual tools difficult to evaluate or replace. The integration is real, but so is the lock-in — and distinguishing between the two requires more scrutiny than most organizations apply during procurement.

Adobe's transition from perpetual licenses to Creative Cloud subscriptions illustrates a different dimension of the problem. The shift was framed as a benefit — continuous updates, cloud storage, cross-device access. For many users, the practical result was a recurring cost tied to software they could not own, with pricing that has increased multiple times since the model launched. The creative professionals who built workflows around Photoshop or Premiere Pro found themselves with few viable alternatives, which is precisely the position Adobe had every incentive to engineer.

The Attention Economy's Collateral Damage

Beyond individual platforms, the broader attention economy has reshaped what software is expected to do. Applications that once had a single, clearly defined purpose now frequently incorporate social features, content feeds, and gamification elements — not because these additions improve core functionality, but because they increase the surface area for engagement.

Fitness apps prompt users to share workouts publicly. Productivity tools incorporate leaderboards. Banking applications push investment products through notification banners. Each addition fragments the user experience and introduces friction that was not present before, while generating data or revenue that benefits the platform rather than the person using it.

The cost is not merely aesthetic. Cognitive load increases as interfaces grow more complex. Decision fatigue sets in as applications surface more choices, many of them designed to steer users toward options that serve platform interests. Security and privacy risks expand as data collection grows more extensive. The cumulative effect across dozens of applications used daily is significant, even if any single change appears minor in isolation.

What Resistance Looks Like in Practice

For users unwilling to simply accept this trajectory, a number of practical responses exist — though none are without tradeoffs.

Open-source alternatives have matured considerably. LibreOffice remains a credible substitute for Microsoft Office in many contexts. Signal offers a messaging experience that does not depend on advertising revenue. Bitwarden provides password management without the pricing volatility that has affected some commercial competitors. These tools require a modest investment in learning and, occasionally, in accepting feature parity that falls short of dominant commercial products.

For those who cannot or choose not to migrate, deliberate configuration can reduce the worst effects of engagement-driven design. Disabling non-essential notifications, using browser extensions to strip algorithmic feeds from social platforms, and auditing app permissions regularly all represent meaningful interventions. They do not fix the underlying incentive problem, but they limit its practical impact.

At the organizational level, procurement decisions carry more weight than individual choices. Companies that evaluate software on total cost of ownership — including the productivity costs of poor UX, mandatory upgrades, and vendor lock-in — are better positioned to resist the most extractive licensing arrangements. Requiring data portability as a contractual condition before signing enterprise agreements is a straightforward lever that remains underused.

The Structural Problem Beneath the Surface

None of these individual responses addresses the root cause. Software degrades because the incentives that shape its development are misaligned with the interests of the people who use it. That misalignment is structural, embedded in how technology companies are funded, how they are measured, and how competitive dynamics in platform markets reward consolidation over quality.

Regulatory attention has increased. The Federal Trade Commission has scrutinized acquisitions that reduce competitive pressure in software markets. The European Union's Digital Markets Act imposes interoperability requirements on dominant platforms. Whether these interventions prove sufficient remains to be seen, but they reflect a growing recognition that market forces alone have not produced outcomes consistent with user welfare.

In the meantime, the most durable protection available to technology users is literacy — understanding the incentive structures behind the products they use, recognizing the tactics being deployed, and making informed decisions about where to place their attention and their money. Software will continue to be shaped by the pressures applied to the companies that build it. Users who understand those pressures are at least positioned to respond to them clearly.
