Splitting at the Seams: The Hidden Agenda Behind Big Tech's Modular Pivot

For the better part of two decades, the dominant playbook in Silicon Valley was consolidation. Build everything, own everything, make leaving feel impossible. Apple perfected the ecosystem lock-in. Google wove its services into every layer of Android. Microsoft quietly rebuilt its empire around Azure and Microsoft 365, tying collaboration tools, cloud storage, and operating system features into a single, gravity-heavy orbit.

Now, something appears to be changing. Across the industry, major platforms are announcing modular architectures, open APIs, and interoperability commitments. Google has restructured several of its core Android components into independently updatable modules. Microsoft has begun separating features that were once baked directly into Windows. Apple, under regulatory pressure in Europe, has cracked open its App Store in ways previously unthinkable.

The question worth asking — with appropriate skepticism — is whether any of this constitutes genuine liberation for the average user, or whether it represents a more sophisticated form of the same old capture.

The Illusion of Openness

Interoperability, as a concept, sounds unambiguously good. Systems that talk to each other, services that don't demand exclusivity, platforms that acknowledge the existence of competitors — these are the hallmarks of a healthy digital ecosystem. The problem is that "open" has become one of the most elastically defined words in the technology industry.

Consider what Google's modular approach to Android actually delivers in practice. Project Mainline, which allows Google to update core system components through the Play Store rather than requiring full OS updates, was presented as a security improvement — and it is. But it also means that critical system behavior is now routed through Google's own distribution infrastructure, tightening rather than loosening the company's grip on the platform. The modularity is real. The independence it implies is not.

Microsoft's unbundling efforts tell a similar story. Teams was eventually decoupled from Windows and Microsoft 365 subscriptions following antitrust scrutiny in Europe. But the separation was surgical enough to leave the underlying commercial relationships intact. The product changed its packaging; the dependency did not meaningfully diminish.

Complexity as a Moat

There is a subtler dynamic at work here that deserves attention. When a platform fragments its services into discrete, interoperable modules, it creates a new kind of barrier: the barrier of comprehension.

A monolithic ecosystem is easy to understand. You use Apple products; everything works together; you stay inside the garden. A modular ecosystem, by contrast, confronts users with a proliferating array of choices, integrations, and compatibility considerations. Which cloud storage connects to which productivity suite? Which authentication layer governs which application? What happens to your data when a third-party module is deprecated?

For technically sophisticated users, this complexity is navigable. For the majority of American consumers — who, surveys consistently show, prioritize convenience above nearly every other consideration — it is paralyzing. And paralysis, in the context of platform switching, tends to favor incumbents. The company whose services already populate your digital life benefits when the prospect of reorganizing that life feels overwhelming.

This is not a conspiracy so much as an emergent property of how large platforms operate. Complexity is not always designed to confuse, but confusion reliably serves the interests of the party already holding the relationship.

Regulatory Pressure and Strategic Compliance

It would be incomplete to discuss the modular pivot without acknowledging the role of regulation. The European Union's Digital Markets Act has applied direct legislative force to platform integration practices, compelling companies like Apple and Google to open systems they previously kept sealed. In the United States, antitrust scrutiny — though more diffuse and slower-moving — has produced its own gravitational effects on corporate behavior.

What we are witnessing, in part, is strategic compliance: the art of satisfying the letter of regulatory requirements while preserving as much commercial architecture as possible. Companies are not dismantling their ecosystems because they have concluded that openness is in users' interests. They are modularizing in ways that satisfy regulators while retaining the data relationships, default positions, and network effects that constitute their actual competitive advantages.

This is not inherently cynical — it is simply the rational behavior of large institutions responding to external pressure. But it should temper any enthusiasm about the modular era as a consumer-friendly revolution.

What Genuine Interoperability Would Look Like

The contrast between performative openness and structural openness becomes clearer when you examine cases where real interoperability has taken hold. Email remains, despite its age and limitations, one of the most genuinely interoperable communication systems in existence. You can send a message from a Gmail account to an Outlook account to a self-hosted mail server without any of those systems requiring a commercial relationship with the others. No single company controls the protocol.

Messaging platforms, by contrast, have resisted this model aggressively. Despite the EU's mandate for interoperability between large messaging services, the technical implementations proposed by WhatsApp and others have been criticized for being architected in ways that satisfy compliance requirements while making genuine cross-platform communication cumbersome enough to discourage adoption.

The difference illuminates a principle: interoperability that emerges from open standards and shared protocols produces actual user freedom. Interoperability that is engineered by platforms to meet minimum regulatory thresholds tends to produce the appearance of freedom with the substance of continued dependency.

Reading the Modular Moment Clearly

None of this is to suggest that the modular trend is entirely without benefit. Faster security updates delivered through modular system components are genuinely valuable. APIs that allow third-party developers to build integrations expand the functional surface area of platforms in ways that serve users. Some degree of unbundling reduces the most egregious forms of tying arrangements that have historically harmed competition.

But users and observers who interpret the modular pivot as evidence of a more user-respecting industry are likely to be disappointed. The companies driving this shift are not abandoning the logic of platform control — they are updating its implementation. Where monolithic integration once served as the primary mechanism of retention, complexity, data centrality, and default positioning are becoming the new instruments.

The great defragmentation, as it is sometimes framed, may ultimately produce a landscape that looks more open while functioning in ways that are no less concentrated. For anyone who cares about genuine digital autonomy, that distinction matters considerably.
